The fastest HDD ever is generally considered to be the Western Digital VelociRaptor series, with the last models (WD1000DHTZ) spinning at 10,000 RPM and reaching sustained transfer rates of up to 200 MB/s. Enterprise-class drives like the Seagate Cheetah 15K.7, spinning at 15,000 RPM, also achieved similar or slightly higher speeds, but hard drives are still much slower than modern SSDs.
