You can tell if a Roomba battery is bad if it doesn't hold a charge, runs for a much shorter time than usual, or fails to power on even after charging. Additionally, the battery indicator may flash an error light or show a charging error. If resetting or cleaning the contacts doesn’t help, the battery likely needs replacement.
