The area code 805 was split to create the area code 661 on February 13, 1999. This change was made to accommodate the growing demand for phone numbers in California. Area code 661 primarily covers areas in the northern part of the original 805 region, including cities such as Bakersfield, Lancaster, and Santa Clarita.
